This week, it was reported on 29-June-2020 that BP released its Statistical Review of World Energy 2020, on which covered energy data by 2019 and provided a comprehensive picture of major energy supply and demand at the country level.
This annual report is one of the most important sources of global energy data, and it is a major source of data for many companies, governmental agencies and NGOs.
The primary energy consumption grew 1.3% last year, less than half of the growth rate in 2018 (2.8%).Still, it created a record high for the world's tenth consecutive year.
Renewable energy accounted for the largest pencentage of the increase of energy consumption, reaching 41%. Natural gas accounted for the second largest increase, up to 36%. But, as for the total energy consumption, oil remained at the top of the list, accounting for 33% of all energy consumption. The rest of global energy consumption came from coal (27%), natural gas (24%), hydropower (6%), renewable energy (5%) and nuclear (4%).
Collectively, fossil fuels still accounted for 84% of the world's primary energy consumption in 2019.
Three-quarters of the growth in global energy consumption came from China, followed by India and Indonesia. The US and Germany showed the biggest declines.
